is a veteran‑led, community‑based organization dedicated to helping people overcome the barriers that make life harder than it needs to be.

Instead of only offering support and connecting people to resources, we focus on the root causes of the challenges families face. Our goal is to make sure every community member has a fair chance to grow, succeed, and live a stable, healthy life.

Sharita "Nicci" Onugha, M.M., CHW

CHIGBO Community Advancement was established February 23, 2026, by Sharita N. Onugha — known to many as Nicci — out of a lifetime of resilience and a deep love for people. For Nicci, this mission is personal. Growing up in Elkhart, Indiana and later becoming a Texas ward of the court, she learned early that people thrive when their community shows up for them.

Her path of service formally began in 1996 when she joined the U.S. Army. Over 29 years, from her early days as a young supervisor to senior advisory roles at the Pentagon and Fort Sam Houston, Nicci focused on one core truth: people rise when the root causes of their challenges are addressed, not just the symptoms.

Now back in the state that first embraced her, Nicci is planting permanent roots in Texas. As a licensed Community Health Worker, certified Resilience‑Building Leader, LivingWorks ASIST responder, and Community Health Practioner, she uses her training and the CHIGBO 7‑Root Model to open doors for Cibolo, Guadalupe and Bexar county residents.

Through CHIGBO, she brings together a strong network of community resources to break down barriers and build resilience. Her vision is simple and bold: a San Antonio where every person has a solid foundation — because when our roots are strong, our whole community can rise.
